The Club
Club History
With a home ground at Carey Bulleen Sports Complex, the Old Carey Soccer Club has a young, but rich history. Due to a lot of hard work both on and off the field, Old Carey (or the Canaries), is becoming one of the fastest growing clubs over recent years.
The senior team has shown continual improvement. After struggling in their first two seasons, the team improved to finish a highly respectable third in 2007. The 2008 season was the best in the clubs short history. The seniors had a fantastic year, remaining in the top 2 all season to achieve promotion before the final round.
In their first year in Provisional 2 S/E, the seniors struggled to adapt to the pace and step up in quality of the higher league. With numerous injuries and player unavailability over the course of the season, the club found themselves in a relegation fight. The players dug deep and managed to steer clear of relegation.
For the first five seasons in the Provisional Leagues, Old Carey’s First Team was coached by Pedro Filipe Simao. Fil was largely responsible for where the club is today, and we are forever grateful for his efforts and achievements with the Club. After an extensive process, the Board unanimously decided this year to appoint Alex De La Torre to the position of Senior Coach. The Club is very excited about both the future of the Soccer Club and the coming season.
Whilst the seniors have ultimately achieved success in their brief history, much of this comes down to the depth in quality at Old Carey, which is evidenced by the achievements of the reserves team. Unlike other clubs, Old Carey considers their reserves team as fundamental towards their future successes. Prior to season 2009, the reserves had never finished lower than third, and in season 2008 deservedly won the reserves championship.
However, due to the struggles of the senior team in 2009, the performance of the reserves suffered. Coached by Chris Moore, the reserves failed to reach the heights of previous seasons, but still managed a very respectable 6th position.
The women’s team has continued to improve, and are now playing in State 3. Despite initially struggling for numbers, the girls now have a full squad with a dedicated number of key personnel. The hard work of both the coaching staff and players saw the girls rewarded with an equal first finish in the 2008 season (losing the championship on goal difference).
It is an exciting time to be a part of Old Carey. The Club continues to grow and is proud to announce the addition of a Thirds team for the season 2010. We eagerly anticipate the coming season!
