For his role in the Reserves 2-1 win against Old Brighton, John Novak is this week’s Player of the Week.
John got the Reserves off to a flying start when he calmly put them into the leave after 20 minutes. His brother Steve played a key part in the move with a lovely “Zidane” turn past his marker, before squaring the ball for his brother to finish, who had indeed timed his run to perfection.
Playing in a central midfield position, John defied his somewhat limited pre-season to be at the heart of most of the Old Carey attacks. He worked hard behing the ball as well, as he continually strived to protect the Old Carey lead.
You won’t however always find John lining up in the middle of the park. During the 2009 season, he had a somewhat successful stint up front, with his performances earning him 2 senior games in which he scored 1 goal. He is no stranger to Senior Football, having played 19 games for the Seniors, scoring 2 goals.
OldCareySoccerClub.com caught up with John earlier this week to get his opinion on the weekends game.
On the team’s Performance…
I thought we were in control until they scored a late consolation, but that aside I thought we were good value and could have grabbed a few more goals.Struggling? Which game were you watching!? Nah we took a bit of time to get going but as the game went on our fitness was probably the deciding factor. I bought new boots the morning of the game, and I think everybody knows if you have shiny new boots you are a good chance to score!
On struggling in the first 10 minutes…

On scoring first…

On what its like to be on field with your brother…
Its good fun, he gave me the assist on the weekend so we have a good understanding. He likes to think he’s the better player but we all know the answer to that!
On the importance of a first up win…
It was good for the side, it’s hard to tell where the group is at but I would like to think that we can challenge for the title this year.
