Canary Girls win convincingly over Melton
An emotionally charged match on a beautiful May afternoon saw the Canaries bag their second win for the season.
The girls came out of the rooms determined to beat a middle of the table team and prove to the competition that we have a good team and we are going to climb our way up the ladder over the coming weeks.
The game started on a high note with a sensational goal from Line Smith, who has brilliant skills and pace on the wing, but has been hesitant to take the shot from long range. This changed on Sunday when she fired an amazing shot from well outside the box to put us in the lead and get out game underway.
This goal was followed up by Louise Dana’s on target shot from the top of the box, to put us at 2-0. Unfortunately, just before half time, a poor attempt at clearing the ball out of the box allowed a striker from the other team to run onto the ball and score Melton’s first goal of the match.
At half time, we discussed taking advantage of our greater fitness and intensity to ensure we gain the three points for the day.
Emotion started to run high in the second half, with an increasing number of fouls and some serious injuries on both teams. A penalty goal was snapped beautifully by Kat Newton, however soon afterwards our rock solid sweeper Steph Wood, badly injured her ankle, forcing her to retire. The quickly restructured defence unfortunately let a second Melton goal into the back of the net.
The 3-2 score line played out for around 20 minutes of emotion charged football, with 2 or 3 injuries suffered by the other team. The midfield worked the ball back into our attacking zone and a pass from Erica Jenkins, gave Louise Dana a shot at goal which was deflected by Melton defence, however Alice Hobday was perfectly positioned at back post to pop the ball past the keeper and give us a safety margin at 4-2.
As Carey settled with the margin and started to play our passing game, another quick goal was snapped by Kat Newton. From here, we didn’t take the foot off the pedal, conscious how easily goals can be snapped back. Unfortunately, Melton did manage another goal, but Carey once again answered the call and our captain Louise Dana finished off the match with her second goal. The final score line finishing at 6-3.
Despite the game having a strange feel, there are a lot of positives that can be taken away from the match. Encouragingly, we have a great depth of players that can and will take a shot, hopefully unnerving our upcoming opponents.
The girls will be trying hard again this week and are hoping for their third win of the season. We are once again looking forward to playing on our beautiful home ground and hoping to dominate a team that is yet to win this season!
