Carey Canaries continue to climb up Lader after a 3-1 victory over Maribyrnong United

The Canaries Ladies were determined to obtain the three points on Sunday against the bottom team in the competition. After winning the toss, we were kicking with the wind to try and get an early advantage over a team that is yet to win a game. We managed to dominate play in the first half and were able to create a few opportunities. Half an hour into the first half, Erica Jenkins was able to get past her opponent on the right hand side of the box and produce a stunning on target shot that gave us the early lead.

The playing style of the other team took some adjusting to and at times our structure, particularly in the mid-field, was a touch disorganised. A shot along the ground from the opposition that luckily hit the post, gave our team the wake-up call we needed to play our game and not be distracted by the different playing style of the other team.

We went into the rooms at half time, adamant to increase our lead and not allow Maribyrnong an opportunity to creep back. Unfortunately, early in the second half Maribyrnong were able to break through our defence and score a goal to even the match.  The Canaries picked up their intensity and passed the ball around well desperate to get back in front. At the 65 minute mark, Louise Dana had a beautiful open run down the middle of the park and took a shot from just outside the box that sailed into the back of the net, putting us back in front.

From here the canaries maintained the fight, keeping the defence strong and utilising some fantastic passing work from our wing players we maintained match domination. At approximately the 80 minute mark, Alycia Pinches worked the ball up from the half way line over to the right hand side and nailed a magnificent long range shot, which gave us the buffer we were looking for.

The girls managed to play out the rest of the match and secure the victory.  Unfortunately, the game was marred by some un-sportsmanlike behaviour on and off the pitch. The Canaries are looking to put that behind them this week and head into next week’s game, against the number 4 team, with a clean and positive attitude.
