Match Preview: Ashburton v Old Carey

May 1, 2010  |  by

The Old Carey Seniors will be desperate to turn in a much improved performance this Saturday against top of the table Ashburton.

After a disappointing loss last week, the team will be looking to bounce back with a good result this Saturday.  The coaching staff have certainly put the squad through their paces on the training track this week, as they look to turn around their performance and recapture the form they displayed against Caulfield.  Much focus has been on developing the team’s structure, transition and work ethic.  In fairness, it was these areas in which Old Carey struggled against Lyndale.

A few players have put their hand up for being responsible for the loss last week.  The squad however vowed earlier in the season to win and lose as a team.  They must show this character and unity should they hope to get anything from this game.

When speaking of this weekend’s game, goalkeeper Chris Paton emphasized that the squad “showed what [they] were capable of against Caulfield, and [they are] looking to put in a similar performance”.

“It is integral that we retain our shape and have confidence in our system.  We have proven that it works, but we must remain calm.  Against Lyndale I think we were always moving forward and became flustered after conceding early.  If we remain composed, get bodies behind the ball and take our chances, then I’m sure we will walk away with some form of result against Ashburton”, stressed Paton.

With Old Carey losing last weekend, there would be little surprise to see a few changes being made to the squad for Saturday’s fixture.  However, manager Alex De La Torre will certainly be keeping his cards close to his chest as he continues to tinker with the line up, searching for the best combinations and balance across the park.

This will be Old Carey’s first fixture against Ashburton, who are new to Provisional 2 S/E after being relegated from Provisional 1 S/E.  Ashburton enter the game in first on 7 points.  However, in perhaps a good omen, the team on top entering each round has failed to collect 3 points in their next match.  Old Carey will certainly be working hard to keep this trend going.

The game kicks off at 3pm at Ashburton Park (High Street Road, Ashburton).
