Round 4 in the Provisional 2 S/E league and for the second week in a row the Old Carey Reserves have beaten the top team by holding onto a 1-2 victory away to Ashburton.
Two hard fought, yet top class finishes from Paul Purcell secured the win.
Playing into the wind, and uphill in the first half, the Canaries provided a valiant effort withstanding wave after wave of long balls from Ashburton; but even with the constant barrage from Ashburton, they defiantly would have to have been the ones considering themselves lucky to going into the halftime break at 1-1, thanks to “Paully” who’s nicely placed shot past the Ashburton goalkeeper gave Old Carey a 0-1 lead early on in the game.
Ashburton, expecting to have the legs to overrun Old Carey in the second half where themselves the ones needing to work just as hard as the Canaries who’s efforts in a long and hard preseason where evident as they did not let up in there pressure to find the back of the net; and mid way through the second half that man “Paully” collected the ball from around the half way line, and ran past the opposition defence, and put it past the Ashburton goalkeeper to take the game to 1-2.
A special mention for a man of the match performance from the ever agile David Dwyer kept the Canaries in the game making several top class saves as Ashburton burst through the Canaries defence only for David Dwyer to show his unquestionable class, and make save after save.
A hard fought win that may not have been of the highest football standards, but a win nevertheless; something the Canaries should take great comfort in knowing that even on an off day, the team can pull together and provide the club with a win against a team expected to be at the top end of the table.
